Forensic Linguists (FL) look for changes in communication patterns. When a subject answers several questions quickly, then pauses before answering a particular question, we want to know what caused that change in pattern. The cause may not be important if caused by an external event. Chances are, however, the subject needed more time to answer. An FL has the tools to determine why. Deception is but one of the possibilities.
